Solon Fire Department Still Investigating Ledgebrook Lane Fire

Fire Chief Bill Shaw said the July fire that destroyed a home on Ledgebrook Lane is still under investigation

Chief Bill Shaw said they still don't know what caused a home at 5800 Ledgebrook Lane to burn down on July 5.

"That is still under investigation," Shaw said. "We're working on a few things and I can't really discuss it."

The Chagrin Solon Sun reported that insurance company investigators have ruled out electrical items that were examined from the home's ruins.

Shaw said discovering the cause of the blaze will be more difficult because of the extensive damage of the house. The remaining structure was torn down for safety reasons.

The fire began sometime after midnight on July 5. Shaw said they believe the fire began in the basement, and was already burning for some time before it was noticed and firefighters arrived.

"I think the fire had quite a bit of a head start," Shaw said previously.

No one was home. The owners, Sheike and Samantha Shabazz and their three children, were at a friend's house for a party and had plans to stay there for the night, Shaw said.

At first, the family believed one of their children was in the house, which firefighters swept through on a rescue operation. But it turned out no one was home.

Soon after firefighters arrived, the first floor of the house collapsed into the basement.

Twelve firefighters from all three Solon fire stations responded to the fire, along with help from Bedford Heights, Orange, Chagrin Falls and Aurora.
