Search for Sex Offenders in Your Neighborhood: Just in Time for Trick-or-Treat

Soon Police will be out in force during Trick-or-Treat , but parents can do a little checking ahead of time, too

Parents preach all year long to not take candy from strangers — well, of course, unless it's Halloween.

It's a good idea to know who your neighbors are year-round, but sending your kids door-to-door offers a little extra incentive to make sure they don't trick-or-treat at a questionable house.

Are you sure a sex offender hasn't moved into the neighborhood?

You can check this searchable database with an interactive map at Familywatchdog.us. A search of Solon turned up 3 offenders.

Another way to search for registered sex offenders can also be found on the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department website.

The website homefacts.com also offers a list of 6 sex offenders in the Solon area.

Solon police will patrol the streets in marked cruisers between 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4 for trick-or-treat.

Kids are urged to carry glow sticks or flashlights so they stay visible during their rounds.

Sex offenders have the lowest recidivism rate of all criminals except murderers, according to dozens of university, federal and state studies. Not all sex offenders have victimized children, and over 1/3 of sex crimes perpetrated against children are committed by other children. 95% of kids are abused by family or friends who aren't on the registry. Dr. Jill Levenson’s 2009 study, “How Safe are Trick-or-Treaters: Child Sex Crime Rates on Halloween?” found that non-familial child sexual abuse accounted for less than .2% on Halloween. Why is law enforcement spreading such glaring myths, and why is the media latching on??

I never allow my kids to do Trick or Treating outside our property. I had setted them some limitations and had warned them that in our place sex offenders are very rampant. My husband and I had them registered to SafeKidZone. It's a pplication on their phone where they will be able to alert their loved ones when they are in trouble. The call can be escalated to the nearest 911, if needed. On this app too, they will be able to view threat level and sex offenders in an area. I am very thankful I have this kind of protection for my kids. If you would like to know more about the service, you can check out their site http://Safekidzone.com
