The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in Wichita, Kansas in 1981 when the Police Chief at that time, Richard LaMunyon, conceived the idea of the Torch Run as a way to involve local law enforcement with the community and the Special Olympics.

Today the Torch Run involves law enforcement in all 50 states and more than 25 countries worldwide, making it the largest grass roots fundraising program to benefit the Special Olympics in the world.
