If you don't and you plan to drink, get a taxi cab or crash at the host's house. Driving should not be an option.

Heading out: Lots of people like to head out to celebrate the new year.Β

If you leave home with a group of people, make sure you keep your group together, Tonelli said.

"Don't wander into unfamiliar areas," he said. "Don't use dark alleys or dirt roads."

Keeping a safety kit with you is a good move. It should include a fully charged cell phone, bandages and other basic supplies.

They are looking for you: Remember, police departments everywhere are on the hunt for drunk drivers tonight. Besides putting yourself and everyone on the road in danger, getting caught drunk behind the wheel could also means serious legal and personal consequences.Β

"Lot's of departments are doing OVI checkpoints and doing other things," Tonelli said. "You have to get a designated driver."

Editor's Note: This article first ran on New Year's Eve 2010. But we were new then, and no one saw it, so we are reprinting it this year. Happy New Year!
