UPDATE: Man Charged in Strangulation Murder

Shaker Heights police charge Maple Heights man in Anderson-Norfus death

Updated 4:21 p.m.

Shaker Heights police have charged a Maple Heights man with aggravated murder in connection with the strangulation death of Sharon Anderson-Norfus on May 4, according to Chief D. Scott Lee and Chief Prosecutor C. Randolph Keller.

William D. Hammons, 20, is in Shaker Heights police custody and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 15 at 10 a.m. in Shaker Heights Municipal Court.

“We’ve got sufficient cause for bringing charges against Mr. Hammons, but we’re going to continue this investigation and be as complete and thorough as possible,” Lee said. “We don’t want to get into the nuances of the investigation, but what I think is important is that we’ve clearly identified an individual who is responsible for this crime and charged them appropriately.”

The slaying occurred at the Oliver House Apartments at 3715 Warrensville Center Road, where Anderson-Norfus lived. Some details of the police investigation were reporteds in a Sun News story last week.

Police had arrested Hammons on May 27 and held him for questioning about the murder of Anderson-Norfus, 60. The arrest was made on Warrensville Center Road, though not at the Oliver House, Lee said.

The man was charged on May 29 with a third-degree felony weapons and  held until Tuesday’s murder charge.

“We’re very comfortable with what we did today,” Keller said.
