Blame the GPS & Black Bear in Solon: Best of the Blotter

Here are some of the weirdest police reports from departments across the region

Here are this week's most bizarre police calls, reports and charges. All information was provided by police reports from departments in Patch communities. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Blame it on technology: A Broadview Heights woman overlooked her .111 blood-alcohol content level on Aug. 26 when she explained to why she drove the wrong way on Interstate 90.

Who deserved the blame? , of course.

That's what 26-year-old Jacqueline Kovach told police after she was stopped at 2:34 a.m. Police arrested her for drunk driving, an open container, no seat belt and willful and wanton disregard for safety. She drove west in the eastbound lanes near the Columbia Road overpass.

According to police, Kovach argued that there were worse drunks on the roads than her.

Bear in Solon: A young bear has been getting around these days — or are there two?

Police aren't sure if a bear that was caught in a tree in Bedford Tuesday is the same one two days later. A man sent WEWS Channel 5 some pictures of a bear running across his street on Thursday. Click here to see the pictures. Several websites also reported that the bear was in Warrensville Heights this week.

Solon Police Chief Chris Viland asked residents to if they see a bear, but .

Private parts in a parking lot: A Northfield man to a female driver Sept. 2 as she backed out of a spot in the Solon Giant Eagle parking lot.

The 58-year-old woman took down his license plate number and called police at 2:13 p.m. While she called, pulled over Matthew D. Thomas, 25, for driving through a stop sign. Police soon realized Thomas fit the woman's description and arrested him for public indecency, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

You can't stay: A man wearing nothing but underwear could not understand the terms of his Beachwood stay last weekend.

Police said the man walked around the hotel lobby Sept. 1, employees because he was mad that he could not stay another night. Beachwood Police kicked the man out, but he left without facing charges.

Skipping out at Austin's: A Cleveland woman and East Cleveland man were charged with petty theft by deception Aug. 29 in Brecksville for consuming $104 worth of food and drinks without paying.

The woman told police that she explained to a hostess at that she only had 50 cents before eating. The employee said they made no such agreement. The 50-year-old East Cleveland man said he came because the woman, who he met at a soup kitchen, offered to treat him to dinner.

The bill shows they .

Hot commodities: Toothbrushes and dog food flew off the shelves Aug. 21 at in Shaker Heights.

First, police arrested a 56-year-old woman of dog food. Officers later chased down a man for taking four toothbrushes from the store. They brought him back to the store and employees said he was Oral-B culprit.

Sadly, this is one of several that have been in the news just over the past few days. One of them claimed the life of an 85 year-old woman who was going the wrong way just a day or two ago. It's very scary.

The GPS was to blame, huh? Well, she screwed up and, by the grace of God and Broadview police response time, nobody was hurt. She'll have her day in court. It's time to take her pic out of the news, though. Imagine having your face plastered in the news for such an offense... Just saying...

"Imagine having your face plastered in the news for such an offense... Just saying..." What is it with you bleeding-heart liberals? Too darn bad...if you don't want your pic plastered, then don't commit a crime. Pretty freaking simple.

Well - I agree with I.M.Wright! And just maybe by putting her face here will make her think twice about ever driving drunk again. She could have killed people! Its not like she committed some small infraction. She was drunk and did not even realize when she turned the wrong way. A sober person, without an open container, would have been more aware of GPS instructions. Anyone with a basic GPS knows that you have to pay attention to which road to turn on when it tells you to make a turn ahead.

its a good thing this poor girl didn't kill HERSELF after how many times her face was plastered over articles online on the news and facebook. she had her day in court. she did 10 days in jail. the judge suspended her license for 3 YEARS. she is on INTENSIVE probation for 2 years. she didn't realize right away that she was going the wrong way but when she did she panicked and it was a nightmare for her she had a panic attack. she was at an all day concert festival in Lakewood her friends had the keys to her car while she was in the building and they left that beer can in the BACK seat of her car. people are soooo quick to judge! I know her very very well and this has almost completely ruined her life. she already had depression and anxiety but people like you made it worse. she never leaves the house anymore... its hard for her to even get up in the morning. she was punished for the crime of drinking and driving she will never do that again but the scars from the media will never go away....
