Great Escape: Fashion Goes Green at Kent State Museum

While the idea of sustainable clothing may not have occurred to you, the latest exhibit at the Kent State University Museum shows that supporting earth-friendly fashion doesn't mean you have to walk around wearing burlap.

These days, being more ecologically minded is not only politically correct, but becoming absolutely necessary in the way we eat, build homes and conduct business.

While the idea of sustainable clothing may not have occurred to you, the latest exhibit at the Kent State University Museum shows that supporting earth-friendly fashion doesn’t mean you have to walk around wearing burlap.

The exhibit, entitled “Sustainable Fashion:  Exploring The Paradox,” includes clothing by famous name designers such as Stella McCartney, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, as well as lesser-know labels, while wall graphics show how often Kent students wear, wash and throw out their clothes.  All actions that leave a heavy carbon footprint on the land when you consider the chemicals from detergents and the quantity of water used to wash the clothes.

You will be awed at how these designers “make it work” using organic cotton, pina silk (a biodegradable material derived from pineapples), Ingeo (a synthetic fiber made of corn) and many other natural materials to create wearable, attractive designs.

The museum is located on the Kent State University Campus and runs through March 18.  For hours and information, contact www.kent.edu/museum or 330-672-3450.
