When Kotora became principal three years later, he took time to know his charges and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. He searched for ways to help them achieve academically, develop self-esteem and learn from their mistakes.

Meanwhile, he developed his own reputation as an approachable administrator, who endeared himself to students with his welcoming smile and ever-open door.
