Young Solon Composer Debuts ‘Luna’s Lullaby’

Solon High School’s Music in Motion, a 52 member musical ensemble, has the remarkable opportunity to perform a world premiere of a musical composition written by one of its very talented students.  Luna’s Lullaby, an original choral piece, composed by ALEX BERKO, will be performed as part of the March 6, 2014 winter choir concert.

Alex, a Solon High School Senior, has been playing piano since age 4 and composing since age 11. He has composed music for an array of instruments and small and large ensembles. He has won awards in local and national contests, and has had the opportunity to have his compositions performed live in a variety of venues.  He is currently studying piano and composition with Cleveland Institute of Music faculty.  Alex plans to pursue music composition and piano after graduation.

Luna’s Lullaby is an 8 minute choral piece written for full choir, with percussion accompaniment. Alex enlisted fellow SHS senior, JESSICA STONE to write the lyrics for the piece. Jessica enjoys creative writing and poetry, and has been involved in many writing clubs. Her poem has a “celestial” and “dreamy” flow, which helped Alex as he created the music.

Solon residents have many reasons to be proud of our schools. This performance is a reminder of the quality and innovation of the school’s highly successful music program. “I am thrilled to present the world premiere of Alex’s composition, Luna’s Lullaby.  Alex shows tremendous promise as a composer, and the choir has enjoyed preparing his music.  However, the greatest part of the process has been watching Alex’s face as his music comes to life.  I have no doubt that Alex will be scoring movies, video games, or creating compositions for the world’s finest choirs, bands, and orchestras.” states Gary Lewis, Director of Choral Activities, Solon High School.
