Thousands of women—ordinary mothers, grand-mothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim—came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presi-dential Palace. Armed with only their white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they took on the warlords and nonviolently forced a resolution during the stalled peace talks.
The key leader of this Peace Movement, Leymah Gbowee, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (the current and first woman president of an African nation), and Tawakkol-Karman (Yemen peace activist) were recipients of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.
