Heavy rains and melting snow has the river running wild

At one point early this morning, rain was falling in Solon at a rate of 4.5 inches per hour.

Luckily, the rain didn't fall that hard for an hour, said Solon Public Works Director Jim Stanek.

"That's cats and dogs," Stanek said.

Overall, Solon got about 2 inches of rain in the early morning today. While Stanek said Solon had some flooding issues, no far reaching failures of the stormwater system was experienced.

He said the flooding event was strange because the stormwater didn't flow how it normally does. That was because the snow – there's still nearly a foot of snow on the ground in Solon – rerouted the water.

But the nearby area may not be done experiencing flooding. Just outside of Solon, the Chagrin River has risen.

Solon Road near Chagrin Falls – about 3 to 4 miles outside of Solon – was closed this afternoon near River Run Park as the river had crested the roadway.

Hillcrest Patch is reporting that farther north on the river, near Gates Mills, , causing worries of a surge in the river in communities such as Willoughby Hills and Eastlake.
