IRS Warns Taxypayers About Email Scam

Users are asked to forward suspicious emails to the service.

The IRS wants people to be aware of a new email scam.

According to a press release from the Internal Revenue Service, the email tells users that tax payments they made have been rejected. If clicked, the link in the email downloads malicious software to the person's computer. Any personal and financial information that is collected can lead to identity theft.

The IRS is asking users to forward suspicious emails to phishing@IRS.gov and then delete the message. The release notes that the IRS does not start contact with individuals through email.
