Sports Blog: Will Thome's Cooperstown Bust Have Cleveland Fans Cheering?

Thome hit two home run's last night to secure himself into the record books and hopefully Cooperstown. Do Indians fan cheer now or wait and see what hat his Cooperstown bust will be wearing?

Yesterday Minnesota Twin (and former Cleveland Indian) Jim Thome hit not only his 599th but the historic 600th home run of his career. Thome became just the eighth man in baseball history to reach this feat, but does it mean anything today?

With the steriod era finally being left behind, should Thome's record night be shadowed by the evil asterik that has haunted his new clubmates Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and A-Rod?
Β
More importantly, as Indians fans, should we care? Do we still hold a place in our large sports hearts for Thome or is his time in Cleveland best buried deep in the Erie Street Cemetary next to the likes of Joey Belle?

I for one stand up and applaud Jim. We shared some great times and memories while he played 14 years in Cleveland, including a unforgettable meeting at the historic Solon Movie theater (unforgettable for him, clearly). Thome is known as an all around nice guy within the league and one that many sports analyst/writers have already cleared from the doping list. But even though he hit more than half of his 600 homeruns in Cleveland, the last few years he has been passed around from team to team playing only part time.

Do we want Thome in the Hall of Fame? No doubt he will enter Cooperstown, but do we still cheer if that bronze bust isn't crowned with the big C? Do we cheer louder if it is?

What do you think? Are you cheering for Thome or is this just another Sportscenter update as we wait for the Indians score to go by?
