New designation indicates hospital’s adherence to highest standards of quality for trauma care
GEAUGA COUNTY, OHIO – On April 15, University Hospitals (UH) Geauga Medical Center was verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as a Level III Trauma Center. The community hospital earned its new designation as a result of a two-day ACS review of its traumatic injury care protocols in March.
To become a verified Trauma Center, a hospital must meet the ACS’s essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance. These criteria cover the hospital resources needed for trauma care, as well as the entire spectrum of care for injured patients from first response through the rehabilitation process and hospital-wide commitment to care.
“The ACS Executive Summary showed that our trauma team had zero deficiencies in our performance, which demonstrates the team’s commitment to collaboration, leadership, clinical knowledge and expertise,” says Peggy Kuhar, RN, MSN, FABC, Chief Nursing Officer, UH Geauga Medical Center.
As a Level III Trauma Center, UH Geauga Medical Center is identified as a hospital with a wide range of subspecialties that can handle most trauma cases. “The ACS verification indicates that the exceptional quality of our trauma care begins in the field with our communities’ EMS teams and continues through the Emergency Department, hospital admission, recovery and ongoing education phases,” says Joseph A. DiBlasio, MD, Medical Director, Trauma Service, UH Geauga Medical Center. “All of these different facets result in improved, leading-edge care for trauma patients in our region.”
The hospital continues to report its trauma care data to the American College of Surgeons on a regular basis. “Being a Level III Trauma Center means every area of our hospital maintains the highest possible standards in the coordination and delivery of trauma care,” says M. Steven Jones, President, UH Geauga Medical Center. “Thanks to our Trauma, Emergency Medicine, Surgical and EMS teams, this verification raises the bar of excellence for our entire hospital for the benefit of the community we serve.”
