University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center, UH Solon Health Center and City of Solon present Health, Safety and Sports Gear Expo on April 27

Free wellness and fitness event will feature 5k run, one-mile walk, health screenings and family fun

Beachwood, Ohio – University Hospitals (UH) Ahuja Medical Center and UH Solon Health Center are collaborating with the city of Solon to present a Health, Safety and Sports Gear Expo. The free family wellness and fitness event will take place on Sunday, April 27 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the lobby of the Solon Community Center, located at 35000 Portz Parkway in Solon.

The Expo is under the direction of Susan Drucker, Mayor, City of Solon. It is one component of an ongoing Mayor’s Initiative for Health and Wellness. “We are excited to support and encourage healthy lifestyles, and it is rewarding to promote wellness throughout the Solon community,” says Mayor Drucker. “This Expo is just the beginning of that long-term effort.”

The event will be preceded by a one-mile walk and 5k run, which are open to adults, children and families. In addition, 200 bicycle helmets fitting heads measuring 24 inches in circumference or less will be distributed free to children who attend the Expo, while the supply lasts.

*Presentations by UH Ahuja Medical Center and UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital clinicians on injury prevention and wellness.

*Free health screenings including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, body mass index, hearing and more.

*Cycling, running and fitness vendors offering gear and tips on safety, and the right equipment for your activities and goals.

*Refreshments and activities for the entire family.

“Optimal health is not just about lack of disease, it’s also about vitality, vibrancy and enhancing your full potential,” says Roy Buchinsky, MD, Robert and Susan Hurwitz Master Clinician in Wellness and Director of Wellness, University Hospitals; and Solon resident. “In bringing wellness tools and activities to the community at an event like this, UH Ahuja Medical Center and the mayor’s team are demonstrating that wellness can be fun and rewarding.”

The one-mile walk and 5k run are sponsored by UH Ahuja Medical Center together with Hermes Sports & Events, the City of Solon and the Solon Community Center. The pre- and day-of registration fee for the walk, which begins at 8:45 a.m., is $15 per person with a maximum family rate of $30. The run begins at 9:15 a.m. and the registration fee is $20 per person with a maximum family rate of $60. All proceeds will benefit UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

Participants will be grouped by age and awards will be presented to the top overall finishers. Both courses begin and end at the Solon Community Center.

Registration is not required to attend the Solon Health, Safety and Sports Gear Expo and it is open to the general public. “We are excited to work with Mayor Drucker and the city of Solon to present this initiative that encourages fun, fitness and good health for every resident,” says Susan V.
