Football Preview: Solon Seeks Revenge Against Mentor
The Solon Coments take on Mentor in a key division game.
Solon hopes to make a statement by defeating the powerful Mentor Cardinals on their home turf.
The Comets came up heartbreakingly short to the Cardinals in the playoffs last year, and a win tonight will not only position Solon for the remainder of the regular season, but be a nice slice of payback too.
The Comets are 4-2 and Mentor is 5-1.
Here's five things you need to know about the Week 7 matchup:
1. Game Time: 7 p.m. Friday. The game will be played at Mentor's Jerome Osborne Stadium.
2. Matchup History: The Comets and the Cardinals have one of the best recent rivalries in Ohio high school football, and right now the Cardinals have the edge. The teams have met three times in the playoffs since 2006, and Mentor has won all of them, including last year's stunning 42-40 game that ended Solon's season. Solon's last win over Mentor was 31-21 in 2010.
3. A Big Game: To Solon Coach Jim McQuaide, improvement is key, and Friday's game is a big one if the Comets want to meet their goal of a division title. "We’ve worked hard and have seen some good results the last two weeks," he said. “The next step to our fourth Valley Division title will be Friday and our improvement this week in practice will be key."
4. Players To Watch: The Comets are facing one of the best quarterbacks in the state in Mentor's Mitch Trubisky. So while the defense is key, that unit won't be able to shut down Trubisky and the Mentor attack. So the Comets playmakers will have to step up. That means Darian Hicks, Drew Barksdale, Khoury Crenshaw and George Barry have to make plays and score points.
