Electrofoam Party: Family Rented Grantwood Pavilion for Birthday Bash
Solon Recreation Director Don Holub provided more information about the massive teenage party broken up at Grantwood Golf Course last weekend.
A Solon resident rented the pavillion at Grantwood Golf Course for her son's Sweet Sixteen party, which included a DJ, a disco ball and a foam machine.
That party held last weekend was marred, however, by multiple arrests of teens and underage adults for underage drinking, marijuana use and curfew violations, according to Solon Police.
Don Holub, Solon's recreation director who also runs Grantwood, said that the party at the pavillion actually had no problems: They weren't serving alcohol, and no arrests were made at the party.
The problem was in the parking lot, where police caught teens drinking and smoking marijuana and some engaging in sexual activity inside cars.
"In the pavilion itself, they weren't doing anything to break the law," Holub said. "But the extra-curriculars in the parking lot were unacceptable."
Police were contacted after the night manager went out to check on the party, found the party's private security people drinking and wild activity happening in the parking lot.
Holub said that he met with Mayor Susan Drucker and Police Chief Chris Viland yesterday to discuss whether Grantwood, which rents out for multiple parties each week, needs to revise any of its policies.
Holub said the golf course has never had any issues like this before, and that he doesn't want to over-react while, at the same time, does not condone or encourage illegal behavior.
He said its important that Grantwood remain available to residents "who want to rent it the right way."
Holub said that the family that rented the pavillion had done some previously this summer and had no problems.
And, interestingly, the pavillion after this party was left in immaculate condition.
"They left the pavilion in absolutely spotless condition," he said. "Our maintenance crews said it was cleaneast they've ever seen it."
