Chain, Chain, Chain ... Chain of Foods — Too Many in Solon?
A conversation about too many chain restaurants in the city was prompted when the news of a new Papa John's Pizza broke.
It's kind of like the old adage: any news is good news. Any new business is good business, right? Maybe not.
Solon Patch reported Friday that Papa John's Pizza will be moving into an empty store front at the Solon Square shopping plaza.
After the story was shared on the Solon Patch Facebook page, cries for family-owned, small business pizza shops came pouring in.
"Such a shame for Solon. Authentic pizza would be so much better. Chicago style! Enough of the chains opening up," said Hal Pickus on the Facebook page Friday.
Some even asked for now-closed businesses to come back.
"I was hoping for the triumphant return of Carlos pizza," said Mike Cook.
Dan Schneider added on the Facebook feed that, "Master or Geraci would have been ideal. Way too many chain pizza places within a [half] mile radius in Solon."
Even on Twitter, Solon Patch followers responded.
"@solonpatch do we really need another pizza chain in Solon? How about a wood burning oven pizza shop?" Tweeted Matthew Knight.
So, Patch wants to know:
- Are you happy about the new Papa John's?
- What kind of business, whether it be pizza or any type of restaurant, is missing from your town?
Start the conversation in the comments section of this story and continue to chat on the Solon Pach Facebook page and Twitter account.

It's a shame when you have to comment on the number of fast food places in Solon. Probably 90 percent of the workers arrive from communities other than Solon and price of products is somteimes a factor. Competition drives prices down and lack of drives prices up; ie: Giant Eagle. If you think that they have the lowest prices, your sadly mistaken. The last fine dining experience in Solon was "43 Bistro" and that has been gone for along time. Solon doesn't support great experiences and because of that "Fast Food Thrives." I didn't see a comment about Starbucks?

I am looking forward to it since Pizza Hut as gone way down hill. Dominos I can't wat because it triggers my migraines and though I really like Mama Jo's they are pricey. I agree there are to many pizza places in Solon now. But I hope this time that Papa Johns has a place in Solon lasts unlike the last time.

I wonder what triggers your migraines in pizza. I love popcorn and eat it all the time, but I get a migraine every time I eat movie theater popcorn.

There will be a new middle eastern (non-chain) restaurant opening soon. They are completely renovating the old pacific east rest. On Aurora Rd. Should open in February (if the city doesnt hold them up). Definitely looking forward to it.

Personally, I'd rather see too many chain restaurants in the city than too many empty storefronts.. Although, the above suggestion of Geraci's DID get me pretty excited.....

It would be nice to have a place like Dino's, but that was the worst location in the world. In fact, they should tear that down or never allow another Resturant there again. I would rather have chains then empty storefronts. Tear down the old Sunoco building too.

Geraci's in the Dino's spot! Think about it..... They have terrible parking in University Heights also, yet have thrived there for 40 years plus.. Not to mention that all of us Heights area transplants would keep them in the black, on our own! That building is too nice to not have a successful restaurant. Great atmosphere. All they need is some Geraci's pizza. Now, who's gonna make it happen?

"... but that was the worst location in the world."
Once again, EXCUSES. How about just admitting you're too lazy.

Once again, Solon residents complaining about a business coming to/staying in Solon. Meanwhile, these are the same complaining fools who do NOT support the places they have now.
But, they're always full of EXCUSES of why don't support them. For all of you who would like more "family-oriented" businesses (a comment alone further highlights your ignorance/cluelessness), head on down to the bank, apply for a loan and open up your own "family business."
Or will you have excuses for that, too?
